William Optics Pleiades 111: An Astrophotography Powerhouse
The Pleiades 111 APO is a premium refractor telescope that comes with everything modern astrophotographers could want. Round stars on full frame? Check. Fast focal ratio? Check. EAF compatible? Check. Threads for attaching M54 accessories? Check. All of this is standard on the Pleiades 111, and it even features other bells & whistles that make it ready to capture your next APOD out of the box.
The Pleiades 111 features a 528mm focal length and 111mm aperture for a speedy focal ratio of f/4.8. This focal length is perfect for wider fields of view with full frame cameras, but can capture distant objects like small galaxies with ease when paired with a smaller sensor camera.
Septuplet Lens Design & Pleiades Name
The Pleiades 111 features seven lens elements — some of which are top-of-the-line FPL-53 glass — which allow it to achieve such an impressively flat field. Like its smaller sibling, the Pleiades 68, these seven lenses are also where it gets it name from: the Pleiades constellation is also known as the "seven sisters."
WIFD Focuser: Ready for Heavy Image Trains
Like other newer scopes from William Optics, the Pleiades 111 comes equipped with the groundbreaking WIFD (William Optics Internal Focus Design) focuser. This dual speed, 10:1 focuser moves the drawtube internally, which essentially eliminates sensor tilt and vignetting. If you do encounter any tilt, the Pleiades 111 comes with a rear-facing tilt adapter with push/pull screws to allow you to dial in your imaging train. This patented design is also compatible with the ZWO EAF out of the box. See the manual below for detailed instructions on how to attach it.
Full Frame Image Circle & Spot Diagram
The William Optics Pleiades 111 features an impressive 48mm image circle, but serious astrophotographers know that the proof is in the pudding when it comes to image performance. The best factory test for this is a spot diagram. The "spots" in the diagram represent the shape of stars. The numbers below each spot chart represent the distance away in millimeters from perfect center as a radius.
The final spot chart in the bottom right has a radius of 21.6mm. Since full frame sensors have a diagonal of around 43mm, this spot chart shows how a star should appear in one of the farthest corners of a full frame camera sensor. Real world performance may vary based on collimation, conditions, and other factors, but the performance of the Pleiades 111 should be excellent on full frame sensors.
