What is an annular eclipse?

An annular eclipse is when the Moon passes in front of the Sun, but the apparent size of the Moon is smaller than the Sun. This type of eclipse, called an annular eclipse, causes a ‘ring of fire’ effect, where only the outer edge of the Sun can be seen.
